Ecosystem Restoration through Tree Planting and Community Action
In April 2025, the Greenshield Foundation for Ecosystem Restoration and Wildlife Conservation, in partnership with XR Rivers, held a landmark event at Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, themed “Ecosystem Restoration through Tree Planting and Community Action.” The event brought together students, educators, and environmental advocates to inspire practical action for a greener Niger Delta.
The programme opened with powerful remarks from Dr. Nwika Goodnews, who served as Chairman of the event. His address set the tone for the day as he urged young people to move beyond mere awareness and take bold, solution-oriented steps to restore the Ogoni environment.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr. Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface on the topic “From Awareness to Action: Practical Steps to Restoring Our Ecosystem Now.” His presentation sparked a lively, interactive discussion with students, exploring community-based strategies for reforestation, pollution control, and sustainable living.
Among the distinguished guests was Dr. Edwin Dapper, Deputy Rector (Academics), who reaffirmed the institution's commitment to partner with Greenshield in future projects. He also expressed gratitude to XR Global and XR Rivers for their support and collaboration.
Engr. Lezorgia Barilee Sinee, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, commended the thoughtful choice of tree species for the school environment and emphasized the importance of involving local experts in the ongoing remediation of Ogoniland by HYPREP.
The highlight of the day was the student-led tree planting exercise, where about 80 young volunteers participated in planting trees across the campus — a symbolic act of hope, resilience, and commitment to ecosystem renewal.
As part of community outreach, Greenshield members and student volunteers marched through Bori City for a disruptive awareness campaign. They visited homes, markets, and public spaces, sensitizing residents on practical ways to protect and restore their environment.
This project not only restored trees but also renewed minds, proving that when communities act together, restoration becomes possible.
